The trail starts on the Kalalau trail and you have to walk for 2 miles to reach the Hanakapi'ai Beach. The first 1-mile is strewn with wet rocks and the second 1 mile makes you descent to the Hanakapi'ai beach with sea caves. You can enjoy a swim in the freshwater of the Hanakapi'ai stream. The trail takes you to the interior of the valley side of the beach along the west bank of the Hanakapi'ai stream. You need to walk under a thick canopy of mango, bamboo and eucalyptus trees to reach a small picnic area. An elevation in the trail will lead you to the river. You would be crossing it several times before the river gets wider after you trek for another 1.5 miles. After walking for around 2 miles, your trail would end at the base of the Hanakapi'ai waterfalls.
