Hawaiiloa Ridge

Hawaii > Oahu > Waikiki
Length5 mi
Elev. Gain1400 ft
Difficulty3 / 5
Rating9 / 10
Hawaiiloa Ridge is a great trail, which is comparatively less crowded than its neighboring trails. It has great views, has a somewhat easy access and is a straight path to the Koolau Summit. Remember, you will need to have a hiking companion here who has a local ID. Sometimes, you will find local hiking groups ready to take you in their party, so that you can go through the gate.

Along the trail you will pass through a deeply rutted stretch and then reach an ironwood forest and a eucalyptus forest.

A special attraction of this trail is the Guava Tree Tunnel. This tunnel of Guava trees seems to be bathed in an eerie light blue-gray light, no matter what the weather conditions are. The soft carpet floor of the forest has earned it the name 'bouncing forest.'

After some more beautiful forests and rolling hills, you will see the trail rising towards the summit with climbing ropes and ascents. However, be careful while using these climbing ropes and make sure that the anchors are firmly placed. The final summit is very steep and will test your physical endurance.
