Iao Valley State Park

Hawaii > Maui > Wailuku
Summary
Length0.6 mi
Elev. Gain100 ft
Difficulty1 / 5
Rating7 / 10
TypeView
The Iao valley was once the site for the battle of Kepaniwai where the forces of Kamehameha I captured the Maui army in 1790. The Iao valley is considered as the most sacred site on the island. This is also the place where the Hawaiians gather and celebrate their annual Makahiki Festival to offer sacrifices to Lono, the God of Fertility and mark the New Year.

Start the hike from the parking lot and follow the cemented path to the left that takes you through an Ethno Botanical Garden. You will complete this loop within 10 minutes. You will get to know different Hawaiian plants and their uses in daily life. You will find yourself back at the main trail but turn left and follow the bridge. Then cross the bridge over the Iao stream and you will get the first view of the foliage covered rock formation to your right. Climb the cemented 133 steps to a land overlooking the stream for a close up look at the Iao Needle. Also look for the Puu Kukui Crater from there.
