The hiking trail begins gently with a few rolling hills. Stick to the broader path and make sure that you have a strong footing as there are a number of sharp turns and steep rocky elbows. You will catch great view of the valley interiors, since the trail follows the mountain grooves. In the trail you will come across the Ironwood Grove, where a thick carpet of fallen needles would cover everything in sight. In most cases you will lose the path, so it is better to aim for the open space past the Norfolk Island pines.
Amateur hikers should turn around after the Hawaii Kai Lookout, though experienced hikers can go on to the Puu O Kona, which is a flat peak.
