The hike begins by going through a small gap in an old fence, and heading west up the shore. The sights and sounds are pleasant here: the crashing surf covers the roar of the highway, while the mountains of West Maui are infront of you and Haleakala is behind you. After a mile of hiking you will reach a raised boardwalk on the highway side of the beach. The boardwalk offers views of the wetlands of Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge as it crosses over it. Birds can be seen here: native birds make the wetlands their home while migratory birds can be seen on the beach. Keep hiking west and turn around when you're ready to return to your car.
