You start your trail with an ascent of 300 feet on the Kaunuohua Ridge and at 1/4 mile you enter the Kuia Natural Area Reserve. Then you start descending through a dense forest. The trail becomes narrow and you continue to descent till you reach 2 miles where you will have the first views of the Mahanaloa and Kuia valleys.
After crossing another 3.25 miles, you will reach a junction, with the Anaki Hunter Trail on the left and the Nualolo trail on the right. Take the trail on your right and descend to the Nualolo Cliff Trail junction another 3.5 miles ahead. After another 0.8 mile of ascent, you will reach the Lolo Vista lookout. After coming out of the lookout, turn left when you go back to the Nualolo Cliff junction. After covering another half-mile, you will reach an open picnic area. You will reach the open Awa'awapuhi lookout if you travel a quarter mile left of the Awa'awapuhi Trail junction.
