Pa'kaoao trail

This is a short trail to the peak of Pa Kaoao which is one of the highest view points in Haleakala National Park. Cinder cones, volcanic ashes and hardened lava flows make up the scenery of this trail.

You begin your trail from the Visitor Center and ascend through the side of Haleakala's cinder cone heading towards the south. You will see the Peak Observation Center and the Puu Ulaula cinder cone to the right. Follow the path as it evades the bottom edge of the cone. Turn left and start climbing the cone.

You will see the Sliding Sands Trail to your right towards the south. Continue climbing the path as it loops and turn left to reach the top of the bowl shaped peak of the cone. From there you can see the Haleakala wilderness and the bottom of the huge basin. In the distance you may also be able to see the tallest peaks of Big Island. Now climb down and go back to the starting point.

Throughout the year. The best time to go is during the sunrise or sunset.

Driving Directions:
You need to take Route 37 from Kahului to Route 377 and finally to Route 378 to reach the trail head that starts at the second Haleakala Visitor Center which is below the peak.
