You begin your trail from the Visitor Center and ascend through the side of Haleakala's cinder cone heading towards the south. You will see the Peak Observation Center and the Puu Ulaula cinder cone to the right. Follow the path as it evades the bottom edge of the cone. Turn left and start climbing the cone.
You will see the Sliding Sands Trail to your right towards the south. Continue climbing the path as it loops and turn left to reach the top of the bowl shaped peak of the cone. From there you can see the Haleakala wilderness and the bottom of the huge basin. In the distance you may also be able to see the tallest peaks of Big Island. Now climb down and go back to the starting point.
