Pepeopae Trail

Hawaii > Molokai > Central Molokai
Summary
Length3 mi
Elev. Gain600 ft
Difficulty3 / 5
Rating10 / 10
TypeForest
The trail is located in the Kamakou Preserve in the remote mountainous region of northeast Molokai. This 2774-acre preserve is located near the peak of the highest mountain of Molokai and homes more than 250 species of Hawaiian plants. There is a large sandalwood pit in the Molokai Forest Reserve, which was dug in the 1800s by King Kamehameha's men in the replica of a cargo hold of a ship to store sandalwood and export it to China.

You will cover a number of places when you head towards the trailhead. When you enter the Molokai Forest Reserve, you will notice the huge sandalwood pit on your left. Another 1 mile will take you to the Waikolu Lookout where you would find a number of waterfalls.

Another short walk would take you to another lookout with excellent views of the mountain fissures. You have to re-start the trail from this lookout at a height of 4000 feet on a walkway and enter into a forest on the top of the mountain. Go on the walkway till you come to an open plateau. The trail makes you descend through the forest of mosses and ferns. After covering another 3 quarters of a mile, the trail would take you to a cave. At about 1 mile from the start, you would come to the Pelekunu Valley Lookout. The trail ends when you descend and go back to the starting point.
