Pololu Valley Trial

Hawaii > The Big Island > Kohala Coast
Summary
Length1 mi
Elev. Gain420 ft
Difficulty2 / 5
Rating9 / 10
TypeView
The Pololu Valley Trial is located at the Northern tip of the island. It begins at the edge of the Pololu Lookout and quickly drops to the valley floor, 420 feet below. Though the hike down is quite easy, the climb will test your fitness. The trail is deeply cut into the surface of the cliff.

When you reach half the way down the trail, you will hit first of the three switchbacks. Pololu is a part of a series of seven valleys located towards the North. The trail reaches the valley floor just behind the shoreline. From this stream, the trail will follow the black sand beach and will enter into an ironwood forest. You can leave the trail at this point and walk along the beach.

After enjoying a lonely walk on the beach, you can pick up the trail again at the far end of the beach. Beyond the valley, the land is private, so you should continue through the ironwood tress and dunes. If you are feeling adventurous, you can walk through the dunes and even remnants of World War II, if you are lucky!
