Puu Manamana

Hawaii > Oahu > Windward
Summary
Length4.5 mi
Elev. Gain2100 ft
Difficulty4 / 5
Rating9 / 10
TypeView
One of the most dangerous hiking trails of the state, the Puu Manamana should be undertaken with extreme caution and only if you are a very skilled hiker, with really good physical stamina and fitness. The trail has gained a reputation as the 'Death Ridge' or the 'Crouching Lion Death Plunge' - and the danger truly suits the name.

The trail gains the major portion of its height in the first mile and a half itself. The path is very narrow with sheer drop of hundreds of feet on both the sides. The trail is also marked by a number of knobs in the middle and a steep and narrow descent, where the snarled roots and patches of moss and rot make the path very difficulty.

Puu Manamana trail begins near the Crouching Lion Inn. You will begin to feel the strain of the trail from the very beginning itself. After a steep climb, you will come to a series of rock faces that you have to climb with the help of handholds. After a bit, you will reach a plateau with the rock formation of the crouching lion. There is a massive mound of rock near the 2,000 feet mark. The hike back can be even more dangerous, since you will have gravity working against you.
