Find a sign in the parking lot that directs you to the left, where you'll find an interpretive sign that tells the story of a Hawaiian princess who was killed by her jealous husband. As the myth goes, the water at the base of the sea caves turns red with her blood every so often. This phenomenon is actually the bloom of aquatic life.
From the trailhead, descend down the path on lava stairs and you will quickly see the first cave on your right. The vegetation is lush here, and makes for a beautiful sight. In a few more steps you will reach a small fork in the trail. The left path takes you to the second sea cave. Here you will also find a grand view of the bay below. Head back to the trail and follow the right path this time. Continue to descend down to the beach. Heed the many warning signs here as the currents and unexpected waves have caused far too many accidents here. Once you reach the destination, you'll find a tunnel in the cliff that goes out 25 yards to the ocean. Extreme caution should be taken here as the water can rush in and smash you against the wall, or sweep you out to the ocean.
