Waihou Spring

Hawaii > Maui > Makawao
Summary
Length2.1 mi
Elev. Gain500 ft
Difficulty1 / 5
Rating7 / 10
TypeForest
The Waihou Spring hike takes you through an experimental forest of pines that was planted by the USGS and Hawaii's Division of Forestry and Wildlife. The spring is usually dry, but the landscape here is always scenic. This hike is an easy, level loop and there is an optional short side trip down to the spring itself.

From the trailhead, you journey begins by going around a gate, through a hikers entrance. There are plenty of pine trees here, and you'll notice the massive amount of needles they have shed. At 0.1 miles, find a sign pointing you straight ahead. The trail begins to slow descend from here, gradually taking you into a gully. Shortly after you'll find another sign that marks the beginning of the loop. Turn right to begin the loop in the counterclockwise direction. Here you'll be surrounded by pine and ash trees, with an occasional redwood. In a short distance you will encounter another sign, pointing you to the right, toward an overlook and the spring. To reach the spring, follow the path down the steep switchbacks, another sign here marks the end of the trail.
