Diamond Head (Leahi) [1 hike report]

Hawaii > Oahu > Waikiki
Summary
Length1.7 mi
Elev. Gain520 ft
Difficulty1 / 5
Rating8 / 10
TypeView
The Diamond Head or Leahi hike is not as strenuous as it is hyped to be. The Leahi was formed from a single eruption, about 300,000 years ago. The crater was named by Western explorers who mistook the calcite crystals in the area as diamonds. The trail does not offer a lot in terms of Hawaiian flora and fauna.

Presently, the trail follows the same path as that of 1908 mule trail of the government. Starting at the back of the parking lot, the trail rises gently from a 200 feet elevation. Along the concrete path, you will come across the old beams of a pistol range site. After following the mule path for sometime, you will come across a concrete landing to your left, where you can rest a bit.

After a long rocky walk, you will come to a steep stairwell of 74 concrete steps, leading to a tunnel. You will also come across a fire control station in your trail. Once you reach the peak, you will have to follow the same route back.

Diamond Head (Leahi) - by MrskatiegrimmSunday, September 12, 2010
this was my second time on this hike this time around I brought my almost 6 year old son. we both hiked with no problems. I am always surprised how many people show up in their slipper/flip flops, as the trail is very uneven and rocky. even though this hike is under 2 miles, I would say tennis shoes are a must. In my opinion, not a very pretty hike, which is why I rated this hike a 7. still, well worth the time to see the summit view. Including our shaved ice reward at the end, it took u.....
